Australia have won their final Group D match at the Football World Cup but failed to advance to the next round.

Ghana qualified on goal difference ahead of Australia, despite the Soccerroos' 2-1 win over Serbia.

Germany ended the group stage in the lead, with six points.

England and the United States have also progressed to the round of 16.

The United States beat Algeria 1-0 to finish top of Group C, and England was second with a 1-0 win over Slovenia.

France's woes continue

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for a review of French soccer following the national team's poor showing in the World Cup, and said no player should receive bonuses.

Mr Sarkozy was speaking after meeting senior government ministers over the saga, which featured poor results, the sending home of striker Nicolas Anelka for insulting coach Raymond Domenech and players walking out on a training session.

Florent Malouda has became the latest player to quit the French camp ahead of the team's scheduled return, opting to fly back to France alone, as Thierry Henry has also chosen to do.

The rest of the squad were due to arrive at Le Bourget airport in Paris at 0930 GMT on Thursday.
