The president of Australia's Council of Trade Unions is promising big changes when she takes the helm of the global union movement.

Sharon Burrow has been elected unopposed to a four-year term as the general secretary of the Brussels-based International Trade Union Confederation.

The ABC reports she will be the first woman and the first Australian to take up the post, in a week when Julia Gillard became Australia's first woman prime minister.

Miss Burrow says the confederation has set a clear mandate and is promising to work more closely with industrial sector unions.
