An American teenager has arrived on the French island of Reunion after being rescued in the Indian Ocean while trying to sail solo around the world.

Abby Sunderland's boat was dismasted in mountainous seas on 10 June.

Emergency distress signals triggered an international rescue operation and she was picked up by a French fishing boat two days later.

The rescue was co-ordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which sent a search plane to spot her boat.

Miss Sunderland, 16, says she is grateful to her rescuers.

The BBC reports she began her journey in January from California. She was attempting to beat the record set by her brother, Zac, who sailed solo around the world in 2009 at the age of 17.

Miss Sunderland said the accident had ended her trip but not her dream.
