World Cup knockout stages begin

The knockout stages of the World Cup began in South Africa on Saturday with two matches.

In the first, Uruguay beat South Korea 2-1 in Port Elizabeth.

Ghana, the last African team left in the World Cup, later beat the United States 2-1 in extra time in Rustenburg. The score was 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Ghana also beat the US by 2-1 in a group match at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Ghana and Uruguay will now meet in the quarter-finals at Soccer City in Johannesburg on 2 July.

Previous African teams to reach the last eight of the World Cup were Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002.
