Congress move to slash aid to Afghanistan

9:28 pm on 1 July 2010

A committee of the United States House of Representatives has voted to cut nearly $6 billion worth of aid to the Afghan government.

Military funding and humanitarian relief aren't affected.

The move follows reports of corruption, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that US investigators believe "Afghan officials and their associates" are sending billions of diverted US aid dollars to financial safe havens abroad.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey, chair of the subcommittee responsible for aid appropriations, has demanded that an audit be carried out of billions of dollars of past funds.

"I do not intend to appropriate one more dime for assistance to Afghanistan until I have confidence that US taxpayer money is not being abused to line the pockets of corrupt Afghan government officials, drug lords and terrorists," Ms Lowey said.

The money could be reinstated in a few months, the BBC reports, if all is found to be in order.

President Hamid Karzai has denied allegations of corruption by government officials, and has pledged to take a firm stance on the issue.
