Dolphin documentary now screening in Japan

2:24 pm on 4 July 2010

An Academy Award winning documentary about a dolphin hunt in western Japan has started screening in the country, despite protests against it.

The Cove focuses on the village of Taiji, where residents annually hunt dolphins for food and capture them for aquariums.

The documentary has sparked protests in Japan; demonstrators accuse the filmmakers of being anti-Japanese.

While some theatres have bowed to pressure and decided not to show The Cove, six theatres in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto and Osaka have begun screening it.

Two theatres successfully applied for a court injunction against the demonstrators.
