Semenya cleared to race

The world athletics' ruling body has announced South African runner Caster Semenya can now take part in women's races, after nearly a year of speculation over her gender.

The 19-year-old world 800m champion has been out of the sport for 11 months after undergoing gender tests.

Although never officially confirmed, it is understood Semenya has been undergoing treatment for an inter-sex condition, the BBC reports.

The athlete rose to fame after winning the women's 800m at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin last August. It emerged that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) wanted her to undergo sex tests.

In January, the IAAF said Semenya was free to run competitively despite its ongoing investigation. But that was quickly contradicted by South African Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam, who said she would not be eligible until the association had made its ruling.
