Poland hosts gay pride march

10:20 am on 18 July 2010

Several thousand people have taken part in a gay rights parade in the Polish capital Warsaw - the first time the EuroPride event was held in Eastern Europe.

The decision to hold it in such a staunchly Roman Catholic country was controversial, and there were several small counter demonstrations. Eggs and plastic bottles were thrown at marchers.

The colourful parade began to the sound of pounding drums and vuvuzelas, a BBC correspondent says. Floats covered in rainbow flags and balloons carried politicians from Poland and across Europe.
