A Supreme Court judge in Indonesia has recommended that Australian Schapelle Corby's 20 year prison sentence for drug smuggling be significantly reduced.

Corby, 33, who is five years into her sentence, has been appealing to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for clemency.

The ABC reports a Supreme Court judge has recommended to the president that her sentence be reduced significantly.

The president will now consider the judge's letter before making a final decision.

Lawyer Iskandar Nawing has not heard anything from the courts, but says his client is mentally ill and the president must show mercy.
