UK to end compulsory retirement age

6:12 am on 30 July 2010

The British government has announced plans to scrap the compulsory retirement age of 65 from October next year.

Currently, an employer can force an employee to retire at 65 without paying any financial compensation.

Campaigners against age discrimination have welcomed the decision as a leap forward but some employers have raised concerns.

The government says the move will bring Britain into line with other countries.
