The New Zealand Government has asked interested businesses to look into whether or not an airstrip for the remote Pacific atolls of Tokelau is feasible.
Tokelauans, who are New Zealand citizens, currently rely on a 20-year-old ship for all transport to and from the atolls.
That ship has been described as un-seaworthy and dangerous, and New Zealand agrees a replacement must be found.
Companies have been asked to explore whether there is enough room on any one, of the atolls for an airstrip and whether a regular air service could be cost-effective.
Radio New Zealand's Parliamentary chief reporter says it is understood Prime Minister John Key will announce a replacement ferry for the shorter term after meetings with the premier of Tokelau at the Pacific Islands forum, being held in Vanuatu this week.
