Cabinet reshuffle in Greece

7:19 am on 8 January 2009

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis sacked his finance minister on Wednesday in a cabinet reshuffle in response to riots, scandals and economic woes.

Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis, 53, was replaced by one of his deputies, Yannis Papathanassiou, 55.

The development, transport, education and tourism portfolios will change hands. The new cabinet will be sworn in on Thursday.

Key Interior, Labour and Defence Ministers will stay, as will Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyanni.

A series of scandals and discontent with economic measures have eroded support for the ruling New Democracy party, which came to power in 2004. Opposition socialists now lead opinion polls for the first time in years.

A shooting of a teenager on 6 December by a policeman sparked the worst riots in decades.
