New constitution supported in Kenya

The official result of the referendum on a new constitution in Kenya shows substantial support for reform.

The electoral commission says 67% of people voted in favour of the introduction of a new constitution.

Among the measures that will now go ahead are the introduction of a bill of rights, land reform and new curbs on the president's power.

The BBC reports the referendum was part of a deal to bring conflict to an end after the general election campaign of December 2007, in which more than 1000 people died.
