Bin Laden's cook jailed 14 years

A man who worked as a cook for Osama bin Laden has been jailed by a United States military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay.

He is the first detainee to be sentenced since the US president Barack Obama took office and pledged to close the facility, the BBC reports.

Ibrahim al-Qosi was one of the first prisoners taken to Guantanamo Bay, having been detained after fleeing an al Qaeda hideout in Afghanistan's Tora Bora mountains.

Now, aged 50, the Sudanese national has admitted having run a kitchen in Osama Bin Laden's compound while being aware that al Qaeda was a terrorist group.

The jury of 10 US military officers sentenced him to 14 years in prison, but that jail time could be significantly reduced in line with a plea bargain, which is likely to remain secret for several weeks.
