The Iraqi journalist who hurled his shoes at United States President George Bush is reported to be seeking asylum in Switzerland.
Muntadar al-Zaidi has been in custody in Iraq awaiting trial since the incident during a visit by Mr Bush to Iraq in mid-December.
Swiss newspaper Tribune de Geneve quotes Mr Zaidi's lawyer as saying he fears for his safety in his Baghdad prison.
The lawyer says his client cannot resume his old job in Iraq.
Mr Zaidi's older brother, Dargham, says that since his arrest, he has reportedly been beaten in custody.
