US Senate begins confirming Cabinet

5:20 pm on 21 January 2009

The US Senate began confirming new President Barack Obama's Cabinet on Tuesday, but has put off a vote on the nominee for Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

A vote on her nomination is scheduled for Wednesday.

The delay is because Senator John Cornyn of Texas wants a debate about foreign donations to a foundation created by Mrs Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Several other nominees were confirmed in a single unanimous vote.

They were: Steven Chu as Energy Secretary, Tom Vilsack as Agriculture Secretary, Arne Duncan as Education Secretary, Ken Salazar as Interior Secretary and Janet Napolitano as Secretary of Homeland Security.

The Senate also approved Peter Orszag as head of the White House budget office.
