Asbestos ship ordered out of Australian waters

A ship at the centre of an industrial dispute in Darwin has been ordered out of Australian waters after asbestos was found on board.

A week ago the crew of the seismic exploration ship, Ocean Endeavour, walked off the ship because of asbestos.

The ABC reports tests have confirmed the ship's air conditioning contained the toxic fibre which is breaking down.

The Maritime Union says those on board will be put on a national asbestos register straight away.

The Maritime Safety Authority says the British owners of the ship Gardline have agreed to move the ship.

It understands the ship will go back to Singapore to have parts of the air conditioning system, replaced there.
