New York Governor David Paterson appointed US Rep Kirsten Gillibrand on Friday to fill the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Ms Gillibrand, 42, is a second-term Democratic congresswoman from upstate New York.
She and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo were considered among the top candidates after Caroline Kennedy withdrew from consideration on Thursday.
