The Indian premiere of a rags to riches story set in Mumbai was held on Thursday night, shortly after it won 10 Oscar nominations.

Slumdog Millionaire is nominated for best director, best adapted screenplay and best picture at the Academy Awards, and seven other categories.

It has already won four Golden Globe awards and has been nominated for 11 BAFTA awards. It was made on a budget of $US9.6 million.

The story about a boy from one of the city's slums competing on a TV gameshow, is taken from a novel originally titled Q&A, by Vikas Swarup, who is deputy high commissioner at the Indian mission in South Africa.

Directed by Danny Boyle, it stars Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan.

The BBC reports the film has won much praise in reviews in India but has also earned some criticism for exploiting poverty.

A fully dubbed Hindi version of the film has been released for rural and small-town audiences.
