11:36 am on 1 February 2009

A national day of protest has been held in Russia over hardships caused by the global financial crisis, with a street rally in nearly every city.

Marches were held from Moscow to Vladivostok on Saturday. The pro-Kremlin United Russia party also held rallies in support of anti-crisis measures by the government.

The government has pledged to spend over a trillion roubles to support the economy, which has been hit by mounting job losses and a falls in the rouble.

The currency has lost over a fifth of its value since November due to a dive in commodity and oil prices.
