State media in China say a plane that crashed in the country's north east this week was a military aircraft from North Korea.
Earlier reports suggested the plane was carrying a defector.
The Yonhap news agency in South Korea quoted a source as saying the pilot of the plane may have lost his way while attempting to fly to Russia from North Korea.
But the Xinhua news agency in China says investigators have found that a mechanical failure caused the crash.
It says the pilot lost his way and strayed into Chinese territory.
