A plane has crashed in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 19 people.

A spokesperson for the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo says the small plane crashed into a house while trying to land at the airstrip in the town of Bandundu.

The UN says a number of people on the ground were killed.

The local police chief says 19 bodies have been recovered from the crash site.

Two people from the plane survived.

Congo's roads and railway lines have largely fallen into decay after years of conflict and neglect, and it has one of the world's worst air safety records.
