Protest at Darwin detention centre under control

6:26 pm on 29 August 2010

The Australian Immigration Department says an incident at the Darwin detention centre, which holds almost 500 asylum seekers, is under control.

At one stage on Sunday morning, the ABC reports, about a dozen men climbed onto the roof of the centre and banged sticks on it. A fire lit in a yard sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Announcing that the men were no longer on the roof and that the fire had been put out, the department said Indonesian crewmen upset about the processing of their cases - they are charged with people smuggling - had taken protest action.

The department says 151 Indonesian crew members are currently being held at the centre.

Previous incident confirmed

The department has also confirmed that there was an incident at the centre on Wednesday morning.

The ABC reports that up to 100 people were understood to be involved and that the incident became violent.

The department says, however, that it was not a riot and that a guard reported to have had his arm broken suffered only bruising.
