Talks on resettlement from Kiribati

8:38 am on 30 August 2010

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says he will use his visit to Kiribati this week to discuss plans to resettle people on the country's largest island, Christmas Island.

Mr McCully, who will also visit Solomon Islands and Samoa, says the president of Kiribati, Anote Tong, has been calling for assistance to shift some people away from overcrowded parts of Tarawa.

He says this is an initiative which needs international help to be implemented.
