Air strike on Gaza after rocket fire

11:45 am on 7 February 2009

Israeli aircraft fired several missiles in the Gaza Strip on Friday after two rockets fired from the territory landed in Israel.

Residents in Gaza said targeted "open areas" were targetted near the southern town of Rafah and smuggling tunnels along the border with Egypt.

An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the air strikes but gave no further details.

Earlier, the military said two rockets fired from northern Gaza landed in Israel.

Separate ceasefires were declared by Israel and Hamas on 18 January, ending a 22-day Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip. Israel said the campaign was aimed at stopping cross-border rocket fire.
