Strikes in France against Govt austerity measures

8:46 am on 9 September 2010

Workers in France are holding a day of strikes and demonstrations to protest against Government austerity measures.

Public transport, air traffic and the postal service were all disrupted on Tuesday.

Thousands of jobs are expected to go as the Government looks to save 100 billion euros of savings in the public sector over three years.

The age of retirement is to be raised to 62, the BBC reports. The official retirement age in France is well below the European average.

Under current rules, both men and women in France can retire at 60. The government says it will save 70 billion euros by raising that to 62 by 2018.
