Police in New Delhi have assumed control of all Commonwealth Games venues in an unprecedented security lockdown.

Some 80,000 police are responsible for security at the venues and about 175,000 paramilitary have been deployed to guard the city from terrorist strikes.

It's also reported that a closure of air space will be enforced for five hours either side of the Games opening ceremonies on 3 October.

New Delhi is also braced for floods after the levels of the Yamuna River surged by four metres on Sunday.
