US - Saudi arms deal reported

8:15 am on 14 September 2010

The US government is reportedly about to notify Congress of plans to offer advanced aircraft to Saudi Arabia in a deal worth up to $60 billion.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Obama administration is also in talks with the kingdom about additional naval and missile-defense upgrades.

The Journal says the deal would be the biggest arms sale in US history.

The newspaper says the administration sees the sale as part of a broader policy aimed at shoring up Arab allies against Iran.
