Extra staff have been needed at Tourism Queensland to sort the applications for a post described as 'Best Job in the World'.

The ABC reports more than 15,000 people from about 180 countries are applying for a six-month contract to live and work on Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays. Applications close in a week.

Tourism Queensland chief executive Anthony Hayes says he is expecting a last minute rush.
