Australia expands immigration detention centres

8:52 am on 18 September 2010

The Australian government has announced plans to significantly expand mainland accommodation places for asylum seekers.

It will double the capacity of the Curtin Detention Centre in Western Australia, and will house up to 300 asylum seekers at a remote air base at Weipa in far north Queensland, the ABC reports.

The Australian government says the measures are needed to deal with an influx of boat arrivals.

Opposition's Immigration spokesman, Scott Morrison, says the government has basically conceded defeat, and the measure will not do anything to deter people smugglers.
