Typhoon sweeps over Taiwan

9:31 pm on 20 September 2010

A typhoon with winds up to 162km/h injured at least 107 people as it crossed Taiwan and headed toward China on Monday.

Typhoon Fanapi, Taiwan's most severe storm so far this year, shattered glass, knocked over motorists on scooters and flooded swathes of land, the National Fire Agency disaster response centre said.

The typhoon also closed a port and an industrial park.

Fanapi has made landfall in Fujian in eastern China, where fishing vessels have been brought back to shore on Monday.

Some residents have also been evacuated from vulnerable areas ahead of the storm.
