Terror attack feared in France

6:11 am on 21 September 2010

Officials in France say the country is at immediate risk of a major terror attack by radical Islamists and urgent security measures introduced last week have been reinforced.

Asked about reports that an attack might be imminent, Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux said the threat was real and vigilance had been stepped up.

Separately, a source close to the Interior Ministry confirmed the police were investigating reports that a female suicide bomber might be preparing a strike in Paris.

Intelligence from an allied foreign spy agency reportedly indicates that al-Qaeda's North African branch is planning an imminent attack in France.
