6:10 am on 23 September 2010

The strongest typhoon to hit China this year has killed 18 people in the southern province of Guangdong.

Xinhua news agency said five died after a dam at a mine in the township of Xinyi, in Qianbai, burst, while two others were in a house that collapsed.

More than 40 people are reported missing, many in a mudslide triggered by torrential rain.

The BBC reports rainfall this year in China has been the heaviest in more than a decade.

Typhoon Fanapi earlier crossed Taiwan, where it killed two people and injured more than 100.
