Criticism by Amnesty rejected

5:27 am on 24 February 2009

Both Israel and Hamas have rejected criticism by Amnesty International, of their conduct during recent fighting in Gaza.

The human rights group says Israel committed war crimes by carrying out direct attacks on civilians using weapons such as white phosphorus and shells loaded with metal darts.

It also says indiscriminate firing of rockets into Israel by Hamas violated international humanitarian law.

The Israeli government says it never used white phosphorus as an anti-personnel weapon. Hamas describes the report as unfair.
