Troops refusing to take part in routine drills

Reports from Myanmar say soldiers in many areas have been refusing to carry out routine tasks.

Soldiers in garrison towns have told the BBC that their rations have been cut for weeks and their commanders have blocked access to their savings, which are kept in a central fund.

The soldiers say they are refusing to take part in routine drills.

Last week, the authorities denied there was any disquiet in the military.

A general election, the first for 20 years, is due to be held in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, on 7 November.
