Man released after Sweden plane bomb scare

Police in Sweden have released a man they had detained at Stockholm airport over a security scare on a Pakistan International Airlines plane.

A Boeing 777 with about 250 passengers on board, flying from Toronto in Canada to Karachi, landed in Sweden because of a bomb alert.

Police detained a man, in his 30s, described as a Canadian of Pakistani origin.

The alert began when a woman in Canada called the police from a payphone, after the plane had taken off, to say a man on board had explosives on him.

Canadian police informed the pilot and the plane, which was in Swedish airspace, landed at Stockholm's Arlanda airport.

Police said no explosives were been found on the plane or in the possession of the man, who was then released.

Swedish police have declined to say whether they viewed the incident as a hoax, saying only that they had to take it seriously.

In Canada, a spokeswoman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said investigations were continuing.
