Mugabe vows further Zimbabwe land seizures

2:49 pm on 1 March 2009

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe says land seizures from white farmers will continue, saying there is "no going back" on land reforms.

Speaking to thousands of Zanu-PF supporters at a rally marking his 85th birthday, Mr Mugabe also said the government will continue to push for a majority stake in foreign companies operating in Zimbabwe.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was not at the venue, despite earlier indications he would attend the rally.

The president's spokesman George Charamba said Mr Tsvangirai had opted out of the event after realising it was organised by Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.

"People should not read this as a snub. He excused himself," Mr Charamba told Reuters.

The BBC reports that Mr Mugabe's supporters raised $US250,000 for the lavish birthday party in Chinhoyi, near Harare.

Zimbabwe's new unity government is heavily reliant on donors to revive the country, which is suffering hyperinflation, food shortages and 90% unemployment.
