The lawyer representing the former Fijian prime minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, insists there is no basis for arresting his client.
Mr Chaudhry will appear in court in Fiji on Monday charged with breaching the country's public emergency regulations.
The regulations state that no meeting can be held without the approval of authorities.
Mr Chaudhry's lawyer, Peter Williams QC, says Mr Chaudhry was arrested on Friday while assessing the impact of the drought on sugar cane farmers in Rakiraki.
Mr Williams says his client has a sound and complete defence to the allegation.
