Rain dampens bushfire threat

Rain has fallen across Victoria, dampening the threat posed by bushfires.

A line of showers has crossed the state with 5 - 10mm of rain likely in many areas.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment says the rain now has helped "quiet things down" and described it as a "real bonus."

It says the situation is far more stable than what was anticipated.

Premier John Brumby and emergency services chiefs earlier issued dire warnings about Tuesday's weather.

However, new fires flared around the state on Tuesday as wind gusts of up to 120km/h blew in from the northwest. But all were kept within containment lines.

Four major fires been burning for weeks and are still out control.
