Police in Pakistan are interrogating five people in connection with an ambush on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

The players' bus and a police escort came under fire from AK-47 assault rifles, rockets and hand grenades as they were driving to the Gaddafi stadium for the third day of a Test match against Pakistan on Tuesday.

Six Sri Lankan players and two officials were wounded. Seven Pakistanis, six policemen and a bus driver, were killed.

Officials said about 12 gunmen were involved in the attack which took place at the Liberty Square roundabout in the heart of the city.

Officials said the attack bore similarities to the assault by gunmen on the Indian city of Mumbai that killed at least 170 people in November.
