Colombia has extradited one of its most powerful drug traffickers to the United States.

The BBC reports it was the latest in a series of extraditions aimed at breaking the power of the country's drug gangs.

Miguel Angel Mejia, known as "the twin", was put on a plane belonging to the US Drug Enforcement Administration and flown to Miami on Wednesday.

The DEA earlier offered a $US5 million reward for information leading to his capture.

The US State Department says Mejia and his brother, Victor, shipped at least 68 tonnes of cocaine to the United States and Europe over a two-year period before their network was broken up in 2003.

Victor Mejia was killed in a shootout with police shortly before his brother was captured.
