The Australian Navy intercepted two boats carrying asylum seekers in waters north-west of Australia on Friday. It says one of the boats was towing the other.

The federal government says 74 asylum seekers and three crew members were on board.

The ABC reported the group would be taken to Christmas Island for health and security checks.

A vessel detained by the Navy on 1 October was 98th intercepted in Australian waters this year.
