The Indian government has sanctioned 782.6 million rupees ($US15.2 million) for improvements to security at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year.

The funding will be used to buy additional security equipment like X-ray scanners.

Organisers said last week that they would adopt security measures similar to those used at last year's Beijing Olympic Games.

Speculation about the fate of the Games, due to be held in New Dehli in October next year, has intensified since an ambush of the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, Pakistan, last week. Six players and a coach were wounded and eight people killed.

There was also a major attack by terrorists in Mumbai in November.
