Police in the United States are searching for an Australian girl, who has been missing for weeks in North Carolina.

Zahra Baker, aged 10, is hearing impaired and uses a prosthetic leg after her lower left leg was amputated several years ago because of bone cancer.

The ABC reports she moved with her father from Townsville in north Queensland to North Carolina and was being home-schooled.

Police believe she was murdered but are yet to determine what happened to her or find her body.

The girl's American stepmother has already appeared in court after admitting to writing a false $US1 million ransom note.

Her father, Adam Baker, is also a suspect and searchers are draining a pond near his workplace.
