Gunman goes on rampage in Alabama

9:15 pm on 11 March 2009

At least 11 people including the suspected gunman and his mother have been killed in a shooting rampage and car chase in the American state of Alabama.

The victims included the man's mother, grandparents, and an aunt and uncle. Five people - including a child - were killed in one home. Several people were also wounded in the rampage.

The trail of death began in Samson near the border with Florida and ended at a metals factory in the town of Geneva, 20km away.

Police say there had been at least four separate shooting incidents on Tuesday, before the gunman killed himself.

There are reports he had lost his job at the factory.

The gunman fired on homes, a petrol station, shops and vehicles in Samson and Geneva.

A local television director, Ken Curtis, told Checkpoint that the 11th body, the gunman's mother, was found in a burnt house not far from where the rampage began.

Samson has a population of about 2,000 people; Geneva's population is about about 4,400.
