Automatic organ donor law mooted in WA

3:16 pm on 18 October 2010

Western Australia could become the first state in Australia to introduce an automatic organ donor law.

Currently, people must opt-in to the provision, but only 16% of people in the state are on the national organ donor register.

Under a new proposal, all Western Australians will automatically donate their organs after they die unless they register an objection.

The state government has commissioned a discussion paper on the system.
