Margaret Thatcher in hospital

Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher has been admitted to hospital to be treated for an infection.

Baroness Thatcher, who was in office from 1979 to 1990, missed an official party last week which had been arranged by the Prime Minister's office at Downing Street to mark her 85th birthday.

She was taken to the private Cromwell Hospital in west London in an ambulance on Tuesday night, the BBC reports.

Her aides said her admission was purely a precaution and doctors believe that a muscular infection she was suffering from could be better treated in a hospital setting.

She is expected to return home in a few days.

In 2005, the former PM was advised by doctors that she should not make public speeches in the wake of some minor strokes.

However, she still attends some public functions, including a recent address by the Pope during his state visit to the United Kingdom.

In March 2008, Baroness Thatcher was taken ill during a dinner in Westminster and spent the night in hospital as a precaution, but was later given a clean bill of health.
