Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith is playing down suggestions that the country's troops will still be in Afghanistan in 10 years.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard told Parliament last week that Australian help will be needed for at least a decade.

But Mr Smith said the number of troops will be reduced after they have finished training Afghan forces.

The ABC reports Australia has just over 1500 troops are in Afghanistan, the majority are based in Uruzgan.
