US bans ink and toner from passenger jets

8:15 pm on 9 November 2010

The United States has banned large toner and ink cartridges from passenger aircraft in the wake of a bomb plot in October.

US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says high-risk cargo will receive extra screening and parcels must be screened and certified to have come via an established shipper, the BBC reports.

Cargo flights from Somalia and Yemen have also been banned.

The strictures come after bombs hidden in cartridges were intercepted on route from Yemen to America in cargo planes.
