8:00 pm on 9 November 2010

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the Obama administration is committed to working with local leaders in American Samoa on a number of issues.

Mrs Clinton made a brief visit to the territory on Monday night.

She says the Obama administration is to provide more than $255 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, $116 million of which will go towards a fibre network connecting American Samoa and Samoa with broadband internet.

Mrs Clinton says the funding for renewable energy sources presents opportunities for American Samoa.
